The obelisk in Luitpoldpark was erected in 1911 on the occasion of the 90th birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold (March 12, 1911) in the middle of the park on Luitpoldterrasse. The line of sight to the monument was planted with 90 linden trees (for the years of life of the jubilee) and 25 oaks (for his reign). A bronze plaque on the 17 meter high structure commemorates the event.

He was an unforeseen ruler who can still be found in many corners of Munich today: Prince Regent Luitpold, who ruled Bavaria until his death in 1912, would have been 200 years old on March 12, 2021.
With his open manner, which was so completely different from that of his predecessor Ludwig II, Luitpold Prince of Bavaria quickly made himself popular with the people of Munich. He showed himself to be close to the people, promoted art and science and introduced women’s studies in 1903.
In terms of culture, Munich experienced a real boom during Luitpold's reign. Luitpoldpark (which, by the way, was a present to the Prince Regent on his 90th birthday), Luitpoldbrücke, Luitpoldstraße, Prinzregentenplatz, -straße, -theater, -bad and the associated ice skating stadium are still reminiscent of this time.
The Luitpold Gymnasium, founded in 1887, also bears his name, as does the Prinzregent Luitpold Foundation of the City of Munich, which is committed to promoting art.
