The seventeenth-century Villa Contarini-Venier in Vo 'Vecchio, which served as the summer home of the Elizabethan nuns, was identified in December 1943 as a place of concentration of the Jews of the provinces of Padua and Rovigo. [1] The four floors of the villa guaranteed ample space for the inmates to lodge, with peaks that even reached 60-70 units. The direction of the camp was entrusted to Italian police personnel; the nuns took care of the management of the kitchen.

The camp was dismantled on July 17, 1944. That day a German unit took the 47 Jews then present in the camp and took them first to Padua: the men in the Piazza Castello prison, the women in the Paolotti prison in Via Belzoni. On 19 July the prisoners were deported to the rice mill of San Sabba and from there sent on 31 July to Auschwitz where they arrived on 3 August. Only three women survived the extermination: Bruna Namais, Ester Hammer Sabbadini and daughter Sylvia Sabbadini.

A detailed written account of the events in the camp, from its establishment to its dismantling, was drawn up by the then parish priest, Don Giuseppe Raisa, and is kept in the parish archive of Vo 'Vecchio.
