The picturesque Buren is hidden on the Korte, a tributary of the Linge. This fortified town has a rich history, in which the House of Orange played an important role. Not only did William of Orange marry Anna van Egmont there in 1551, but today King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima are still the Count and Countess of Buren.

Heerlijkheid Buren was founded at the end of the 10th century when the large county of Teisterbant was divided. The Van Buren family became the ruler of the manor. On an information board we read that the town fell into the hands of Frederik van Egmont five centuries later. He received the manor from the Duke of Gelre as 'compensation for costs incurred'. Buren was then promoted to county with Frederick as first count.
Anna, Frederik's wealthy great-granddaughter, married William of Orange in the mid-16th century. The countess subsequently went through life as 'la Princesse d'Orange'. And Willem as Count of Buren. Since then, Buren has also been a real Oranjestad. The many information boards that we encounter during our city walk proudly tell us about it. Moreover, the members of the House of Orange-Nassau still use the title Count/Countess of Buren. Sometimes the name Van Buren is even used by the Oranges to remain incognito.
