The old opera was badly damaged in World War II. The city council wanted to leave the remains (in some cases there were plans to blow them up). In the 1950s, a citizens' initiative to rebuild the old opera was founded. The reopening took place in the presence of the then Federal President Carstensen on August 28, 1981.
A tour is only offered as a guided tour for 12 or more people with prior registration (mailto: soeren.appuhn@t-online.de).

At that time, the construction costs of the Frankfurt Opera were planned at 2 million marks. By the time it was completed in 1880, it had cost a total of 20 million marks.
It was largely destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944 and a new opera house was built in 1951. In 1965 the ruins were to be torn down completely, but thanks to civil protests and Germany's largest fundraising campaign to date, it was rebuilt until 1981.
