Piazza delle Erbe (or more simply piazza Erbe) is the oldest square in Verona and is located above the area of the Roman Forum. In Roman times it was the center of political and economic life; in the loop of time where Roman buildings have been placed before later buildings. In 2012 it was considered the most beloved Italian square in the world.

The Piazza delle Erbe (“Herb Square”) is the oldest square in Verona. The piazza was a forum in Roman times and a meeting place for merchants and traders even back then. The market takes place here every day and sells fruit, vegetables, souvenirs and typical products.
Of the palazzi surrounding the piazza, noteworthy are the Palazzo Maffei on the north side with baroque statues on the balustrade, next to it the Torre del Gardello and on the east side the Casa Mazzanti with its facade frescoes. In front of the Palazzo Maffei, the Venetian column with the Lion of St. Mark towers over the square, and in the middle rises the bowl of the market fountain with the female figure of the so-called Madonna Verona.
