The Holocaust Memorial is a memorial which is intended to commemorate the murdered Jews in Europe who were murdered during the Second World War. Whether the memorial with its cuboid concrete blocks was successful is certainly a matter of debate. Definitely not an 'ordinary' monument.

You can clearly see various cracks in the blocks - one of the blocks is supported with iron frames to prevent breakup.

The artist has managed something great that makes me speechless. To go through in silence, but also to experience the pulsating life around ... contradictions? Maybe. Every visit to Berlin makes this memorial a must.

Impressed. Oppressive atmosphere. Energetically very dense.
              Wow!
              Really successful!

There are certainly different interpretations of this. In between I got the idea that the blocks represent the Hitler regime in their ice-cold, tough, monotonous immobility. The SS, the laws, the courts, the whole system. There is no escape, the supervision is comprehensive. No space to live, for freedom, for individuality. Just rigidity, cold. No empathy, no humanity.
And in between on the narrow paths the individual visitor who gets anxious. A shadow of the Jewish person who has no chance in this ice-cold and rock-hard system. No space. Just tight.

The Holocaust memorial consists of a wave-shaped field with 2,711 steles and is intended to stimulate visitors to reflect with this abstract shape. The memorial can be viewed from every side. The concrete steles are of different heights. This creates the wavy pattern depending on the viewer's point of view. The "Information Center" located under the Holocaust Memorial documents the persecution and extermination of European Jews.
Wave-shaped also because walking between and over the steles should be arduous.

As probably intended by the artist, the feeling of being lost arises between the dreary concrete pillars.

The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, officially known as the "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe", was opened on May 10, 2005 and is one of the most impressive memorials in the German capital. The memorial covers an area of about 19,000 square meters in the center of Berlin, not far from the Brandenburg Gate.

The architecture of the memorial, designed by Peter Eisenman, consists of 2,711 concrete steles of different heights, forming a labyrinth of intersecting corridors. The visitor is surrounded by the rising concrete blocks, creating an oppressive and disorienting atmosphere. This abstract design is intended to symbolize the isolation, loss and disorientation that many people experienced during the Holocaust.

The memorial is intended to commemorate the six million Jews who were systematically murdered during the Nazi genocide. It serves as a place of reflection, remembrance and commemoration of the horrors of the past. Next to the central memorial is an underground information center that presents the personal stories of the victims and background information on the Holocaust.

The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin is a moving symbol of Germany's commitment to remembering the atrocities of the past and to calling for a peaceful and tolerant future. It attracts visitors from all over the world and inspires people to engage deeply with history and ensure that the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten.

The memorial to the Jews of Europe murdered during the Holocaust is an absolute must for visitors to Berlin. A place of sadness and shame about the horrors of the Nazi dictatorship of the 3rd Reich. Today in November 2023 it is even more important than ever.

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (the "Holocaust Memorial") consists of the above-ground Field of Steles and an underground exhibition. The "Information Center" located beneath the Field of Steles documents the persecution and extermination of European Jews. Visitors first receive basic information on the historical context in the foyer and then enter four themed rooms, each exploring the topic from a historical and personal perspective. The Field of Steles and the "Information Center" do not compete with each other, but rather complement each other, forming the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.
