Just a nice place with a small lock, an old barge and a houseboat.

Unfortunately, the lock at Bardowick is in poor condition and was closed in 2012. When or if the lock is repaired, is still in the stars. It is, as always, also a matter of money. Since today the vegetables are transported by trucks, Ilmenau no longer has any significance as a transport route. The lock has fallen into a deep sleep and is waiting for a prince who kisses her awake. This is how the museum ship, with which the vegetables were once transported to Hamburg, is caught there.

But somehow it has remained a magical place.

The lock is located directly on the very good bike path towards Lüneburg and is therefore easy to reach. If you cycle from Bardowick to Lüneburg, you will automatically pass this lock.

The shipping traffic on the Ilmenau has to overcome a lock here, next to it a nice berth for ships and a resting place at the millstone of the missing watermill.

The Ilmenau River was a waterway of great importance for the trading center of Bardowick.
Merchant ships could sail here.
It is not known when the first lock was built.
It was first mentioned in 1386.
In 1434, Lüneburg's mayor, Lange, had it further expanded.
The current lock, located a little further south near Eichhof, was built between 1932 and 1934.

The Bardowick lock is located at km 5.65 in the Ilmenau and was built between 1933 and 1934.

It is a single lock whose chamber walls consist of anchored steel sheet pile walls. The heads consist of concrete half-frames and the chamber floor consists of concrete blocks on a gravel bed. The above- and below-water closing elements are mechanically operated wooden stem gates. The lock is filled and emptied via gate gates. The permissible draft is 0.9 m.

In the event of an accident or for maintenance and repair work, the lock can be drained using an inspection lock. The inspection lock consists of dam beams that are stored at the lock in Wittorf.
