Partenkirchen goes back to the Roman travel station "Partanum". This lay on a pre-Roman trade route, a side branch of the Via Claudia, which ran along the Lech and which was opened after Drusus and Tiberius conquered the northern Alps and the foothills of the Alps in 15 BC. was expanded.

Garmisch and Partenkirchen remained independent market towns until 1936, when, under pressure from the NSDAP because of the upcoming Olympic Games, a "union" was formed, which continues to this day.
