Pappenheim Castle towers high above the city - without a doubt one of the most important knight's castles in Bavaria. The castle ruins are still very well preserved today and can be explored extensively. From the towers and the defensive wall you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city and the landscape, in the rooms you can immerse yourself in medieval life and in the nature and hunting museum you can learn a lot about the animal world of the Altmühltal.

Opening hours:
End of March to beginning of November
closed on Mondays
Tuesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m

Entry:
Adults: 5 euros
Children: 4 euros

The location of Pappenheim Castle alone makes a visit worthwhile. The castle is located on a hill above a loop of the Altmühl and from there you have a great view over the Altmühl valley. The nature and hunting museum is also located on the castle grounds.

Pappenheim Castle
From the keep you have a wonderful view over the city and the enchanting landscape. The castle, the gateway to the Altmühltal, is the ancestral home of the Counts of Pappenheim, who were once hereditary marshals of the Holy Roman Empire. The most famous member of this family is Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim, who was also called "Schrammhans" because of the many scars he acquired in battle. He fought under Wallenstein in the 30 Years' War and was fatally wounded in the Battle of Lützen, in which the Swedish king, Gustav-Adolf, also met his death. Schiller made the name Pappenheim known through his work "Wallenstein" by putting the sentence "That's how I recognize my Pappenheimers" into the commander's mouth. This sentence not only stood for the courage and bravery of the Pappenheim cuirassiers, which Count Pappenheim commanded, but also for their loyalty to the king and sincerity. Today the sentence is sold more in its original form

The castle chapel with its starry sky is particularly romantic; you can also get married here or have your child baptized. The ruins of the former George Chapel on the main castle are ideal for an outdoor wedding. 2 halls can be rented for celebrations (ancestral hall & coat of arms hall) or one of the outdoor areas. The city administration of the city of Pappenheim also offers civil weddings at the castle. The half-timbered hall serves as the registry office at the castle.

Unfortunately we were too late to visit the castle - but we want to come back and do it again.
You can take a nice day trip in connection with the town.

Entry is now €5 for adults.

With its great animal preparations I liked the hunting museum almost better than the castle. The salted entrance fee of 4 € for the castle makes up for the hunting museum.
