Guimarães is one of the most beautiful historic cities in northern Portugal.
The Portuguese consider the city to be the birthplace of their country, as the first Portuguese king (Afonso Henriques, 1109-1185) was born here. Guimarães also served as Portugal's capital in its struggle for independence.
Guimarães also has an eventful history, with the city being particularly influenced by the Middle Ages. Many characterful buildings still bear witness to this era today. Within the city limits are a magnificent Gothic monastery, a heavily fortified castle and an elegant 15th-century palace. A labyrinth of cobblestone streets and charming squares await you between these buildings. These are lined with traditional buildings with owner-managed shops.
