The Sagarmatha National Park, which is over 1100 km², has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The name is derived from the national language and means "forehead of the sky" - better known as Mount Everest. In addition to this, there are two more eight-thousanders in the area of the national park (the Lhotse and the Qowowuyag or Cho Oyu). In 1992 the adjacent Makalu-Barun National Park was created in the east. Together, both parks cover an area of over 2500 km². The months of March / April and October / November are the cheapest travel times, and the chances of good road conditions are the best here. An administrative fee is charged when entering the national park.
