The Tatenberger Schleuse is located in the Dove Elbe just above the branch of the Dove Elbe from the Norderelbe. It enables watercraft to navigate this waterway at different water levels. In addition, it is integrated into the flood protection dike and prevents the tidal current from entering.
The lock was built between 1949 and 1952. As part of the dyke systems of the Dove Elbe, it has since protected the surrounding area from flooding and at the same time enables inland waterway traffic to Bergedorf regardless of the tide. The built-on sewer enables the water level to be regulated, which has a positive effect on water management in the Vierlande and Marschlande area.
