The slender structure once served as an architectural model for the neighboring Löpsinger Tor. As the only gate tower Nördlingens he had no gun platform and was therefore often the target of enemy attacks. A commemorative plaque commemorates the fighting of 1634, when invading imperial soldiers could only be expelled from the tower by firing it. The present structure, including the twelve round-arched windows and the curved roof cap, was built during the last years of the war (1645/1646).
