It is one of eight locks in the Nordgeorgsfehn Canal and currently definitely the most modern: The state's own lock "NGFK IV" in Neudorf in the municipality of Uplengen. For more than two million euros, it was completely rebuilt within a year and inaugurated on Wednesday by Environment Minister Hans-Heinrich Sander.
The old lock was more than 100 years old and no longer stable, which is why the NLWKN (Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation) in Aurich decided to build a new one. Modern locks in the approximately 30-kilometer-long Nordgeorgsfehn Canal are a must: "The canal, which was completed in 1916, is an important link between the Ems-Jade Canal and the Jümme; pleasure craft and smaller passenger ships are regularly on the move here," emphasized Minister Sander. The Nordgeorgsfehnkanal is a second order body of water and is maintained by the NLWKN.
