By bike you can fully enjoy the picturesque landscape of Lake Diemelsee. When cycling around the lake you also have the opportunity to rest on beautiful beaches and hop into the water if you want to refresh yourself. In Heringhausen there is even a free beach, where you will find next to the large lawn and a kiosk, showers and play equipment for children in the water and on the beach.

The Diemelsee is located a few kilometers northeast of the Uplands in the northeastern foothills of the Rothaargebirge, which lies in the northeast of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. It extends mainly in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, its small northern part and also its dam belong to the Hochsauerlandkreis. Located in the nature park Diemelsee between Willingen and Marsberg in the area of the municipality Diemelsee and the city Marsberg it is located at the Diemel and its inflow Itter. Its shut-off structure is about 500 m south of the village Helminghausen (southwestern district of Marsberg). The only shore village is Heringhausen.
The Diemelsee is located in a wooded low mountain range, whose highest mountain right next to the reservoir is the Kopf (about 610 m above sea level, west of the Itterarm in the west). Immediately east-southeast of the dam rises the Eisenberg (594.6 m) and a few kilometers south of the Koppen reservoir (715.1 m).
