The Harz is a wet area. There is a lot of water. For this reason, water has long been used in the Harz Mountains to generate energy. There are many dams and the youngest of them is the Granetalsperre in the Goslarer Bergland, built between 1966 and 1969.

Herzog Juliushütte is the name of a steelworks founded in 1575 and the settlement that was built not far. Today both belong to the city of Langelsheim and are located in the Astfeld district.
At the exit of the Grane from the Harz valley of the same name, the Brunswick Duke Julius had a steelworks and settlement built in the 16th century. Together with the Frau-Sophien-Hütte and the Okeraner Frau-Marien-Hütte, metal extraction from Rammelsberg ores was concentrated in these three huts in the 16th century.
The Granetalsperre was built from 1966 to 1969 and is operated by Harzwasserwerke GmbH. It serves exclusively for the drinking water supply.
