Near Wüsteneutzsch you will find the unfinished canal lock of the Elster-Saale Canal, which was designed as a lock staircase in the true sense. The difference in height was 24 meters.
Construction began in 1938 and December 1942 was over, as World War II burned all resources. Two lock chambers of identical construction were planned, with only the upper chamber being completed. The existing chamber is 85 m long and 12 m wide.
In order to avoid the problematic sewer water supply during locks, 2 savings pools (savings lock) were considered.
Here the upper lock chamber with the two pillars towards the descent.

The last lock of the never completed Elster Saale Canal.
Construction of the canal began in 1933 and stopped in 1943. It was supposed to connect the White Elster in Leipzig with the Saale near Leuna and thus connect Leipzig to the North German waterway network via the Saale and Elbe and to the North Sea via Hamburg.

An impressive building, which would have overcome a height difference of 24 m height. The construction work was discontinued in 1942. There were about 15-20 ships could have overcome the difference in height daily. It is still included in the plans that the gap of the canal could still be closed, but this will certainly fail because of the construction costs in millions of heights.
