Gut Trenthorst has a long history. In the 14th century, a knight from Wesenberg is named as the owner, who sold it to the Lübeck cathedral chapter. It then belonged to the Lübschen estates for a long time. In 1955 it was transferred from private ownership to the Max Planck Society and was then state-owned. Today it is home to the Thünen Institute, which is part of the division of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The buildings probably got their current appearance around 1910. Around the 2010s, the buildings were extensively renovated. The buildings are listed monuments.
