They can already be seen from a long way off: Rising above Bardowick, a municipality bordering the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg to the north, the rotating mill wings show visitors from outside the way to one of the few wind-powered commercial mills in Germany. Family-owned since 1907, the mill, run by master miller Eckhard Meyer, supplies surrounding bakeries and private consumers with flour from a variety of grains made according to traditional craftsmanship. In addition to guided tours of the mill and a visit to the associated shop, which has an extensive range of organically produced goods as well as animal feed and gardening supplies, the mill café, which is also located on the farm, invites you to stop off with homemade cakes and pies. Regardless of whether you arrive by bike, car or public transport, Meyer’s Windmill is a destination that is worth visiting!

Rare and worth seeing.

In 1813, the miller Johann Friedrich Meyer built a Dutch windmill on the western edge of Bardowick after repeated applications for concessions had failed in the 17th and 18th centuries due to resistance from Lüneburg. The old windmill is still in commercial use today and can process 300 tons a year. A green department store with a natural food store is the second economic mainstay of the company. After the mill had been without wings and had a pitched roof since the 1950s, it was able to regain its old appearance in 1994/95 with the support of the local windmill association in a comprehensive restoration.

Today, the new wing mechanism drives a grist gear, a 20 KW generator converts the wind energy into electricity, which is used to drive the electric motors of the other grinders. Of particular technical interest are the blades of the mill. The so-called Ten-Have wings with Fokwieken and Rem flaps are a Dutch variant of the well-known venticant wings, which the German Fliegermajor Bilau invented in the 1920s. The technical maturity of this wing design gives the Bardowick windmill a high wind yield and safe wing control. The turning blades of the old mill with the massive towers of Bardowick Cathedral in the background form an incomparable sight when viewed from the B4 federal highway.
