The Blautopf is the most beautiful and, after the Aachtopf, the second largest karst spring in Germany. Its catchment area extends over approx. 160 km². From the 21 m deep funnel-shaped spring pot springs the blue. Its bulk amounts to an average of 2,270 liters per second, but can reach up to .32,000 l / s. Under the blue pot, the largest karst cave system in the Swabian Alb is suspected.

The Blautopf in Blaubeuren in Baden-Württemberg is the second water-richest karst spring in Germany. This is where the blue springs from, which flows to the Danube after around 22 kilometers in the Ulm urban area.

The blue pot is known for the more or less intense, but always striking blue color of its water, depending on the light. The blue color results from a physical effect of light scattering (so-called Rayleigh scattering) on the nanoscale lime particles that are dispersed in the water. Due to their small size, the blue light is preferably scattered and creates the blue glow. The same effect can be seen in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland; there the effect is caused by nanoscale silicate particles.
