When Hamburger confectioner Hinrich Christian Olde set out to find a suitable piece of land to expand his business in the mid-18th century, his path took him to Mellingbek in Poppenbüttel. There he bought in the years 1764/65 two mills, established himself in the lower of the two and built his business. From 1786 coins were even made here for the Danish king.
Sugar confectioner Olde gradually developed an aristocratic lifestyle and soon even expanded his land to create a park on English model, today's Hohenbuchenpark.In the vicinity of his former estate in Poppenbüttel later a way was named after him.

The park extends along the Alsterwanderweg at the tributary of Mellingbek in the Alster. A wooden bridge leads to the west bank of the river in the park, which spans between Mellingbek and Alster. The brook builds up there to the Hohenbuchenteichen, which are used as a rainwater retention basin. As its name suggests, the Hohenbuchenpark is an old mixed beech forest that is rare in Hamburg. Mixed forests with oak shares are generally ecologically very valuable because they represent the habitat of many, even rare species.

As a result, regular care measures are carried out in the approximately 11 hectare forest park. In addition to many beech trees, there are also oaks, hornbeams, ash, birch, linden and even a botanical "outsider", a Japanese hemlock.

However, the old woodland expands again and again to glades and meadows and gives the view of the Alster free. Then you can probably discover here on a sunny day, some canoeists. The large meadow in the center of the park is often used as a deck and play area for children.
