Already in 1240 Zechstein limestone was quarried, burned and used as mortar for the construction of the Uetersen monastery nearby. In 1876 the lime deposits of Lieth were discovered and the very good suitability of the material as fertilizer lime in agriculture was recognized. In 1986 the cessation of lime mining was announced and it was not until 1991 that the Liether Kalkgrube was designated as a nature reserve.

You are standing here in front of the former excavation pit, most of which is open to the public. And a visit is worthwhile, because the oldest geological rock layers of the North German lowlands are exposed here. Take a little time and stroll through the area. On numerous information boards you can find out a lot of interesting facts about geology, history, fauna and flora.
