There is a beautiful view over Bonn from an observation platform. At the foot of the platform is the Dornheckensee, which shimmers turquoise in the sunshine.

After the completion of basalt mining in Oberkassel, some of the quarries filled with water. The Dornheckensee is the largest and deepest of them. It goes down to a depth of 20 meters under the water surface. Rock falls and undercurrents make swimming a life-threatening undertaking. A forester was once an eyewitness when an edge broke off and disappeared into the lake together with the oak tree growing on it. There have also been dead people who were caught by undercurrents and could no longer escape the ice-cold deeper water layers. Swimming seems rightly forbidden here!
