The mill draws the water for power generation from Wardersee, Brahmsee, Pohlsee, Lustsee and Borgdorfer See with a total of around 3 km2 of water surface. The usable gradient is around two meters. In addition, the hydropower plant regulates the level of the first four lakes.

It is assumed that Alt-Mühlendorf has had a water mill since at least the first mention of the place in 1271, which was used as a grain and wage mill. In the now well-preserved mill from 1860, electrical energy was generated from water power for the first time during the classic mill operation in 1913. A DC generator operated a battery, from which the light requirements for the owner of the mill and his neighbors were covered. In 1949 the system was converted to three-phase current and the power supply company Schleswag fed the electricity not required for its own use into its network.

Since 1971 the turbine has been driving a generator of 23 kilowatts, with which the mill owner's annual needs could be covered almost entirely from the operation of the hydropower plant. In 1992 the watermill was sold to Schleswag (E.ON Hanse).

With the order of the State Office for Monument Preservation Schleswig-Holstein on October 4, 2005, the water mill was entered in the monument book for cultural monuments from historical times and is therefore under monument protection.

The Warders watermill is located in the district of Alt-Mühlendorf. It is assumed that at least since the place was first mentioned in 1271, there was a mill that was used as a grain and tanning mill in what is now Warder. The mill, which is still in good condition today, dates from 1860. It was used to generate electricity from 1913, so that with the turbine installed in 1971 it was able to cover almost all of the owner's own needs at the time. The water mill was sold to Schleswag in 1992 and generated around 42,000 kilowatt hours in 2004. Today it is under monument protection.
