The pretty Thann Castle dates back to the 12th century and is slightly elevated above the Schwarzachtal. Today you will find a small museum here. The keep can be climbed within opening hours. A castle festival and various other events take place here in summer.
Burgthann is located about 15 km southeast of Nuremberg. Either take the Altdorf / Burgthann exit of the A3 motorway or drive on the federal road 8 via Postbauer-Heng towards Nuremberg. Before Schwarzenbruck, an arterial road leads to nearby Burgthann.
The castle ruins themselves lie above the picturesque Schwarzach Valley in the middle of the village. The path is signposted.

The castle is located on a mountain spur above the Schwarzach valley. A deep ditch carved out of the rock separates them from the hill that once housed a large outer bailey. The foundation walls of this outer bailey can still be seen in some buildings. In front of the main castle is a narrow kennel, the masonry of which seems to grow out of the sandstone rock. Certainly there was once a drawbridge at the entrance, but the gate building was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1897, the archway is a new building from this time.
