Under the rule of Albert of Austria and Isabella of Spain, the city flourished and, around 1609, a square square was created to concentrate commercial activities there. On this square you will find a number of monumental buildings, partly in the Renaissance style. The square also offers a view of the St. Walburga Church and St. Nicholas Church, which are slightly further away.

Until the end of the 16th century, on the north side, the derelict Oude Vleeshuis and Oude Landshuis were found. On the east side was the Old Town Hall, of which the so-called Spanish Pavilion is still a remnant. Important Renaissance buildings are the Town Hall of Veurne, the Landshuis with Belfry of Veurne, and the Vleeshalle.

Veurne seems to be the most peaceful town in the Westhoek. Life goes on in a friendly way on and around the Grote Markt. Only visitors sometimes dare to cause additional crowds. The lovely quiet character of the town is also reflected in a short walk, which starts at the market with a wide range of special buildings and continues along a beautiful piece of nature near the water. Often also in the middle of greenery, where you can have a quiet picnic undisturbed.
