Ramelsloh owes its creation to a spiritual foundation. When the Vikings attacked and destroyed Hamburg in 845, Bishop Ansgar fled. A woman Ikia gave him land in the forest of "Hramesloa". The first church and a men's foundation were built on this land. The Ramelsloh canon foundation founded by Ansgar belonged to the diocese of Verden.
