The large Helbewehr at Westgreußen establishes the historical Helbesystem.
It derives from the actual Helbe two arms of the river - north (to the left) the Schwarzburger Helbe and south (to the right the Saxon Helbe.
The Schwarzburger Helbe was created by the Teutonic Knights in the middle of the 13th century,
to supply its coming Griefstedt with water. (Distance approx. 15 km as the crow flies)
The Saxon Helbe was created in the 14th century for the water supply of about 12 km (as the crow flies) distant city of Weissensee.
In addition, the Helbesystem enabled the operation of numerous water mills.
In the course of history, a total of 23 mills are historically documented in the Lower Helbetal.
The large Helbewehr is considered a technical monument and was last in 2001
elaborately renovated.
