    Here, at the narrow point between the Schlei branch of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, the important Viking sea trading center Haithabu flourished between the 8th and 11th centuries. The exhibition house impressively tells the story of this time with replicas and archaeological finds. Seven Viking houses were also reconstructed on the site, in which mediaeval life is shown very vividly.

    The museum is currently open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (deviations are possible on public holidays) and the prices vary from 3 (children) to 9 euros (adults). In the Haithabu Café you can strengthen yourself afterwards and let the impressions have a lasting effect. The café is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

      The museum tells the story of the early Middle Ages, where Haithabu was a kind of trading center. There are lots of exciting things to discover: original finds, reconstructed models, etc.
      But not only the museum itself is worth a visit, but also the directly adjoining Noor (a almost completely separated from a larger body of water, lake-like part, often with special flora and fauna) as well as the outdoor area of the museum, where it u.a. There are seven Viking houses to visit.

          The Viking Museum Haithabu is not only attractive from an architectural point of view, but also a real cultural institution in Schleswig Holstein. As a visitor, you immerse yourself in Viking history. Rune stones, jewellery, coins and even a Viking ship, once the fastest on the entire Baltic Sea, are well protected in the exhibition rooms. You can literally feel the Viking spirit in the museum's premises.

            A very interesting museum about the Viking Age.
            Haithabu is located at the gates of the city of Schleswig. In the Viking Age, from the 9th to the 11th century, the early medieval city was one of the most important trading centers of Northern Europe. In Haithabu, the main long-distance trade routes intersected, bringing together people and goods from all over the world. To protect the city, a fortified semi-circular wall was built. For almost three hundred years, Haithabu held the key position in cargo handling between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. After all, only 18 kilometers of land had to be crossed from this location to reach the North Sea via Treene and Eider. With the end of the Viking Age, around the middle of the 11th century, its functions were transferred to Schleswig, located on the north bank of the Schlei.

                Haithabu (Old Norse Heiðabýr, from heiðr 'Heide', and býr 'Hof'; Danish / Swedish Hedeby, Latin Heidiba; also Haiðaby, Haidaby) was an important settlement of Danish Vikings and Swedish Waragans. The place is considered an early medieval city in Northern Europe and was an important trading place and main hub for long-distance trade between Scandinavia, Western Europe, the North Sea region and the Baltic States. It was founded around 770 and finally destroyed in 1066.

                Haithabu was located on the Kimbrian Peninsula at the end of the Schlei in the Schleswig narrow (Isthmus) between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea near the historic Ochsenweg (or Heerweg). The place probably belonged to the then administrative unit Arensharde. Today the area belongs to Germany, the site is part of the municipality of Busdorf near Schleswig in the Schleswig-Flensburg district.

                Haithabu, which has been abandoned for over nine centuries, is, together with Danewerk, the most important archaeological monument in Schleswig-Holstein and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018. The ramparts around the former settlement are part of the nature reserve "Haithabu-Dannewerk".

                        The Viking Museum Haithabu is one of the most important archaeological museums in Germany. Unesco has designated the Viking Age trading center and the Danewerk border building in 2018 as a World Heritage Site.
