The Buchstein rocks are a protected natural monument and a geotope located near Bayreuth. This striking rock formation consists of sandstone from the so-called Bayreuth Formation (Rhaetian-Lias or lowest Lias). The rocks, reaching up to 10 meters in height, exhibit particularly beautiful cross-bedding, honeycomb weathering, and limonite crystallization. A popular hiking destination, the rocks are characterized by their location in the middle of a forest and constantly offer new perspectives due to weathering processes. A historic water reservoir dating from 1893 is also located nearby.

The Buchstein is a beautiful rock formation. The individual rocks are ideal for climbing for both beginners and advanced climbers. There are also some pre-prepared climbing routes. Climbing is not allowed everywhere. The signs always point to designated climbing areas.

The rock is very steep. It's best to climb with long pants and long shirts. Since there are no hooks in the walls, you always have to climb top rope or free solo 🤪. The rock heads for hanging the rope are easy to reach on the mountain side.
