The grain transport plant was built in 1896 at a time when Bremen was the largest European trading center for grain. Today, the huge silo at the grain port is operated by J. From 1914 to 1916, the 40 meter high and 200 meter long Silo I with a brick facade was built and largely operated from 1916. The silo was finally completed in 1919. The grain silo held 32,000 tons. The new facility was operated by the Bremer Lagerhausgesellschaft (BLG). Up to four ocean-going vessels could moor at two covered piers in this grain port with railroad tracks and conveyor belts. The operation was heavily geared towards rail loading. The in-house electric shunting locomotives from the BLG's founding phase still exist today.
