One of the largest swing bridges in Europe used to be here. After the modernization it became a bascule bridge. After the Meyerwerft had complained long enough that they needed even larger ships for more space, an additional hatch was installed at the taxpayer's expense.

The Jann Berghaus Bridge over the Ems in Leer in East Friesland is one of the largest bascule bridges in Central Europe after the Erasmus Bridge. The bridge is 464 meters long, from the west side it is 206 meters and from the east side 204 meters to the hinged part. The approach bridge consists of 24 field bridges. The width between the railings is 12 meters and the width of the roadway is 7 meters. The folding part is 63 meters long in total. When it is open, 45 meters of it are unfolded and 15 meters protrude into the bridge basement. The construction costs at the time were 40,100,000 DM, which corresponds to a square meter price of 7125 DM.

The now 464 meter long bascule bridge from 1991 was named after the builder of the first bridge from 1948 and is a popular highlight at the gates of the city of Leer. It connects the Rheiderland with the rest of East Friesland, but today also leads the other way around the road from Leer to Autobahn 31 and to the Netherlands. For us cyclists, the bridge is all the more important today, as the railway bridge at Weener is currently destroyed and the Ems can only be crossed again at Papenburg.
Before the first bridge was built, many ferries connected the otherwise largely cut-off Rheiderland with the east side of the Ems.
