The Fishermen's Monument

About the statue:

Statue of a fisherwoman looking back at the sea one more time, from where her lover should have come.
Around the statue are 35 marble slabs with the names of the Urk fishermen who drowned at sea.

The Urk fishermen's monument is a monument in Urk on the coast near Wijk 3.

The fishing and fish processing industry brought a lot of prosperity to the former island of Urk.
But Urk and its inhabitants also had to pay for that.
In the past, fishing was not yet practiced by means of modern techniques and large cutters.
The botters and cutters were vulnerable, and they often sank in storms.
Many paid for fishing with their lives, and their bodies were often never found again.
