It begins at the dividing weir in Großzschocher, which regulates the water distribution between the Weißer Elster and the Elster flood bed. Immediately afterwards it takes up the Elster flood bed on the right, continues between the Schleußig district (left) and the Leipziger Ratsholz and crosses under the Schleußiger Weg at the Paußnitz Bridge before the Pleiße flood bed flows into the right at Leipziger Eck. In the last section, the racetrack bridge at the Scheibenholz racecourse, the Sachsenbrücke with Anton-Bruckner-Allee and the Klingerbrücke with Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße span the Elster flood bed.

The White Elster (Czech Bílý Halštrov) is a 245.4 kilometer long right tributary of the Saale.

It rises in the Czech Republic in the Elster Mountains east of Aš (Asch), about one kilometer as the crow flies from the German-Czech border (west of boundary stone 5/18) near Bärendorf, not far from the village of Výhledy (Steingrün) and flows into the south of the Silberhöhe district of Halle into the Saale.
