After the expulsion of the Germans from East Germany, many refugees arrived in the Gmünder area who had a significant influence on Gmünd. No wonder, at the end of 1949, more than 30% of Gmünder were "expellees". Gmünd keeps alive this sad part of its history in the cityscape until today.
Gmünd joined in 1953 a partnership with the former German Brno and dedicated the Brno Mendel also a monument.
