Cappenberg Castle is a former monastery that was closed as part of Prussian secularization. Later, Minister of State Baron von Stein bought the large property and thus saved it from decay. It now belongs to one of his descendants and there are numerous different exhibitions in the large buildings.
All pilgrims to St. James also receive a stamp in the collegiate church. You can find the opening times and price for the castle here: lwl-museum-kunst-kultur.de/de/museum/schloss-cappenberg

The castle grounds themselves provide pleasant strolls, and the surrounding Cappenberg Forest features numerous well-maintained trails. Look for shorter, circular paths that explore the natural beauty and offer views of the castle.

Is Schloss Cappenberg accessible by public transport?

You would typically take a train to a nearby town like Lünen or Selm, and then connect with a local bus service that goes towards Cappenberg. However, bus frequencies might be limited, especially on weekends, so it's advisable to check the latest schedules before planning your trip. For a more flexible visit, driving is often recommended.

Are dogs allowed on the trails and within the castle grounds at Schloss Cappenberg?

Dogs are generally welcome on the outdoor walking trails around Schloss Cappenberg and in the surrounding forest, provided they are kept on a leash. However, access for dogs inside the castle buildings, museums, or the collegiate church is typically restricted, with the exception of service animals. Always be mindful of local regulations and clean up after your pet to ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors.

These provide convenient options for a break or a meal after exploring the castle and its surroundings. Additionally, you may find other local eateries in the village of Cappenberg or nearby Selm.

What unique historical artifacts or features can be found within Schloss Cappenberg?

Most notably, within the southern transept of the Romanesque Collegiate Church, you can admire the Cappenberg Barbarossa's Head, a gilded bronze portrait bust of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa dating back to around 1160.
