The presence of the Basilica of the Madonna dei Miracoli is the destination of significant pilgrimages. It was erected following the apparition of the Madonna to a humble peasant, Giovanni Cigana, in 1510. The building, constructed under the direction of the Venetian Franciscan Francesco Zorzi (1466–1540), presents itself as a harmonious ensemble of simple and linear forms: the succession of arches of the cloister, the semicircular elements of the tympanum, the lateral sails that delimit the crystal rose window, the statues that decorate the main façade, make the basilica an authoritative example of sixteenth-century architecture.
