Ancient Tradition, Flourishing Ceramics and Terracotta, Squillace
The flourishing craftsmanship of ceramics and terracotta is a long-standing tradition, an art that is likely very ancient and developed as early as the time of Magna Grecia, making Squillace one of the twenty-seven Italian municipalities to hold the Designation of Origin (DOC) (PDO) designation. Many of the works produced here are exhibited in museums in London, Paris, New York, Capodimonte, and Palermo.
Today, thanks to the associations represented in the area and the commitment and participation of its citizens, numerous festivals and traditions have regained popularity in the ancient town. Among the most popular events are the Palio of the Principality, the Procession of the Three Kings, the Castle Festival, and the Nativity Play.
Over the past thirty years, a rapidly expanding seaside resort has developed along the beaches of the old town, with a population that almost doubles during the summer season.
The development of tourism has been the driving force behind the opening of agritourism and holiday resorts.
