The former monastery church was once the oldest settlement of the Cistercian order in the Diocese of Augsburg. The equipment of the three-aisled basilica is essentially dominated by the baroque.

With a length of 80.5 m, a width of 27.7 m, and an interior height of 24 m (nave), the Marienmünster (St. Mary's Minster) is the largest monastery basilica and the most monumental building of the 14th century in Bavarian Swabia. Built between 1352 and 1387 under Abbot Ulrich III Niblung, its floor plan is a Latin cross with its beams of varying lengths. Because the strict rules of the Cistercian order did not permit towers but only turrets, the church has only a 46 m high crossing tower.
