The St. Johannis Church is a Protestant Lutheran parish church in the Hamburg district of Eppendorf. It is one of the oldest foundations in North Elbian territory, was the center of a large parish for a very long time and is the mother church of many other churches in northern Hamburg. The named after John the Baptist building is considered the best known "wedding church" in Hamburg.

The striking Neo-Gothic church was designed by the Berlin city planner and church architect Johannes Otzen (1839-1911). The church has a four-aisled brick basilica with transept in neo-Gothic style. It is the first sacred building ever built by Johannes Otzen, who created a total of 22 churches and is considered to be perhaps the most important church architect of the late 19th century.

The Evangelical-Lutheran St. John's Church looks like a pretty village church in the midst of Hamburg's big city architecture. The visitor can admire artistically carved figures of priests on the front pews and, above all, numerous precious paintings. One shows Samuel Heinicke, cantor of the church from 1768 to 1778 and one of the pioneers in German schools for the deaf.
The church was first mentioned in 1267, but is probably much older. Ebbo, Archbishop of Reims, is said to have founded it around 840. This makes it one of the oldest parishes in the north of the Elbe. The church became Protestant in 1530. Over the centuries, the building has repeatedly suffered from looting in the course of military conflicts. It survived World War II unscathed.

The church has had its current form with the rectangular half-timbered hall measuring a good 33 meters by 12 meters since 1622. In the 20th century, several extensive renovations were necessary, whereby the church received a tower entrance and a wooden barrel vault.
