The city center of Auxerre (pronounced "Ausserre", the inhabitants want it) is really very beautiful. The tourist route that you can buy at the tourist office takes you in the footsteps of Cadet Roussel. This famous song that we learned in our childhood is inspired by a character who really existed: Guillaume Joseph Rousselle, called younger Roussel, born April 30, 1743 in Orgelet in the Jura and died January 28, 1807 in Auxerre, was a French bailiff for the city of Auxerre. His eccentricity was kindly mocked in this song that bears his name. Take your time to discover the Saint-Étienne Cathedral, the Place de l'Horloge, the quays on the Yonne and the Place Saint-Nicolas.

You can drive to the famous clock tower in the old town. Then the pedestrian zone begins. Auxerre is worth a more thorough exploration. The town dates back to the founding of a monastery in the 5th century. Many old buildings and beautiful churches can be seen.
But Auxerre is also a very lively town with many small shops, bars and restaurants.
