From here you have an impressive view of the Delta Works, which was built in 1953 after the devastating storm surge. Strictly speaking, this is just the Oosterschelde barrage, but as the largest part of the storm surge protection it is usually called simply Delta Works. Incidentally, along the Delta Works you can cycle over on a bridge to the island of North Beveland.

The Delta Works is one of the most famous works in the world. More than half of the Netherlands is below sea level. The Delta Works were built for everyone's safety to prevent a repeat of the flood disaster in 1953.

At Deltapark Neeltje Jans you can experience history all over again: from the flood to the construction of the Delta Works.
