Project Elerweerd - Steengoed and the Kempen en Maasland Regional Landscape are each contributing to this major project on the border of Dilsen-Stokkem and Maaseik. The project creates added value in several ways. It increases river safety during high water levels in the Meuse River, and thanks to a well-considered lowering of the future ground level and the working methods we use for this, we are creating dynamic riverside nature. As a result, the Maasland region can count on even more tourists!
We are compensating for the loss of agricultural land by constructing an irrigation project next to the Elerweerd River. This will allow 550 hectares to be irrigated.
In 2019, we received the permit for the extraction of Elerweerd. For over fifteen years, approximately 1.5 million tons of gravel and sand will be extracted annually, which we will then process in a processing facility into various types of high-quality building materials for ready-mix concrete, concrete products, and road construction. It goes without saying that this project will have a significant impact on the surrounding area, and that's why we're always in direct contact with local residents. This has already resulted in numerous preventative measures against dust, noise, and visual pollution.
