During the ice age the flow of the continental ice sheet honed the surface of Messukallio down to a flat-faced roche moutonnée. The ice sheet cracked off some glacial erratics and carried them along. Perhaps Sormikivi, standing half a kilometre away, is originally from Messukallio.
Church services were held at
Messukallio when the weather did not favour travelling to church by boat. Later on a forest church was established at the site. It is used for church services, devotional services, and marriage ceremonies.
