The artwork offers the visitor a beautiful panorama and serves as a source of inspiration as a landmark in the landscape. It also offers the visitor the story of mining, geology, archaelogy, war and the nature of the underlying area De Zwarte Plakheide.

You can see the Kamiel van de Piël from miles away in the moors of the Peel. At this departure point you can find out more about the nature reserve 'De Zwarte Plakheide' by means of information boards. The accompanying artwork is inspired by a group of trees known as the Camel of the Peel.

In the past, the vegetation in this area was not so high, so you had a good view of the group of trees that looked like a camel from afar. These trees were therefore an orientation point for the shepherd and walkers.

You can still find this group of trees on the grounds of the Ter Peel women's prison, but here the trees no longer serve as a landmark.

The artwork in this place is a kind of ode to this group of trees. The Limburg band Rowwen Hèze has written a song about Kamiël van de Piël.
