Montfoort Castle is a medieval fortress dating back to the 12th century, with a turbulent history of sieges and destruction, still visible today in the gatehouse and outer bailey. After centuries of education and correctional facilities, the castle has evolved into an atmospheric, multifunctional venue for gastronomy and events.

The historic town of Montfoort with the magnificent castle and its centuries-old flair is worth a visit. The castle, built by Bishop Godefried van Rhenen in 1163, has been used for various purposes for centuries. So it served as Altmännerhaus and reformatory for girls. Over the centuries, the castle had changing owners. For example, in 1545 Emperor Charles V was a short-term owner of the castle. In the catastrophic year of 1672, the invading French troops of Louis XIV blew up the castle, which was not rebuilt. The only remains are the beautiful entrance gate with two heavy round towers. Nowadays there is a restaurant with a terrace at Schlossplatz.
