It was in 1792 that the municipality of Mâcon moved into the current Town Hall. It was then the most sumptuous private residence in the city. The central part of the building was built in 1750 and Monsieur le Comte de Montrevel, owner in 1767, had two wings added. In 1880, François Martin, mayor at the time, had two more wings built back onto Rue Carnot. Despite the numerous works it has undergone over the centuries, the Town Hall has retained many testimonies of its origins: the period woodwork in the wedding room, the medallion portraits of the great philosophers of Antiquity in the old library, the coats of arms of certain towns in the department in the reception room, the splendid staircase with its wrought iron railing that dominates the entrance hall.
