Nieder Neuendorf Border Tower

The border tower on the riverbank in the Nieder Neuendorf district is one of the last remaining GDR watchtowers in the former Berlin border section. It was built in 1987 as the command post of the 38th "Clara Zetkin" Border Regiment, along with 18 other border towers. After reunification, it was preserved as a "contemporary witness" and has been open to the public since November 1999.

The exhibition was completely redesigned in 2014 and now uses multimedia to convey the events from the end of the Second World War to the completion of German reunification. The structure and daily routine of the GDR border troops, as well as the internal surveillance mechanisms, are explained using the former 38th Border Regiment as an example. The exhibition also describes the history of refugees, those wishing to leave the country, and opposition members from the region. Historical film footage and a free audio guide make a visit to the bilingual exhibition (audio: German, audio: English) a special experience.

Since 2009, the border memorial stone by artist Heike Becker has been located next to the border tower.
