A canal was dug here in the 16th century through the gravel banks of the Ouse Estuary, creating a harbor sheltered on the west by the South Downs. In 1847 Newhaven got a rail connection with London, soon followed by a ferry service to the French Dieppe.

Newhaven Port has served as an important link between England and France since 1847. International ferries regularly carry passengers from Newhaven to Dieppe, in France. This is a very useful harbour if you're riding the Avenue Verte between London and Paris.

The port has had an interesting history. During World War I, it was used as the main port to transport people and materials to France. An estimated 17,000 crossings left from Newhaven, carrying over six million tonnes of supplies.
