Potash mining played a significant role in Ovelgönne at the beginning of the 20th century. Between 1906 and 1926, potash (potassium salt) was mined here in the Prinz Adalbert shaft – an important raw material for the production of fertilizers.
A key technical tool was the so-called "mine dog," a small mine cart used to transport the mined rock underground. The name comes from miners' slang and has been preserved to this day.
Today's Ovelgönne, a district of Hambühren, developed from the former miners' settlement. Mining shaped not only the economic but also the social development of the region.
